Handicapped

Tue Feb 24, 2009, 12:48 AM
I've realized that I say 'basically' a lot when I have a lack of anything to say.
Word crutches are not fun to deal with especially when 'dealing with' consists of getting rid of it. So I was tutoring in bio and I could hear myself saying basically over and over again. Basically this, basically that, basically oh well.

There are pretty basic crutches such as 'like' or 'um', and some rather strange ones like 'here.' 'Here' is among those that are interesting to observe, but then progress to become really irritating to hear, then sort of melt away as it becomes a regular pattern/habit to hear the word 'here' repeated over and over and over and over (a homonym! now that's a term I haven't heard in a long time).

Do you have any word crutches? (Lets pretend people actually comment on my journal)

HARHAR oh you say the wittiest/wisest things sometimes.

It's funny you mention this because in biology class, we were practicing for an oral exam and my goodness, I used so many filler words. Especially 'um' and 'so' even when it doesn't make sense, gahhhh: "So, um, the protein, the DNA helicase, so it unzips the DNA by, uhh, so breaking the hydrogen bonds and um, so afterwards, so, the, uh, the other protein, so DNA polymerase," etc, etc.

It's such a despairing feeling for me to see, halfway through, when I've been doing something like that for the past few minutes, that I can't stop it even after the realization.

'Here' as a word crutch, I've never really heard before, though. That's really quite strange. It's quite strange to imagine, too.

But people sound so smart when they say 'basically,' haha! 8D

Oh, you're very welcome~

LOL mannn. My handwriting is totally messy and not so fabulous these days. It's all spaced and slanted and the letters melt into one another. HARHAR my penmanship is horrible.

I personally now despise the word "basically." I first used it in a freshman lit assignment and my teacher mentioned how "basically" is a casual word. And now I can't stand it, so I'm glad you noticed your handicap. Few do. I don't think I have any blatant handicaps... I hate hearing "like" way too much too.
I'm sure you can break it if you try though. It's not hard if you think carefully about what you say.
